My first experience of the Grand Canyon was, I have to admit, not as overwhelming as I thought it might be. The sheer size never fails to amaze, but I saw it, as many visitors do, in the middle of a summer day. The bright light makes all the myriad shapes and contours of the rocks disappear and the haze from atmospheric pollution reduces visibility dramatically. A better experience is to visit in winter and brave the elements to witness the Canyon come to life during the special light at the beginning or end of the day. Then, one can really begin to appreciate the wonder of the Grand Canyon.
